The son of Pulpit and Love The Chase comes from humble beginnings that are rather unheard of in the sport of kings. Owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred the colt for a mere $12,500, formed DAP Racing, and came up with a plan to get their California-bred to the Kentucky Derby. They presented this plan to, trainer, Art Sherman. Three years later, California Chrome has accomplished what many deemed impossible. Winning the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the chestnut was the favorite going into the final leg of the Triple Crown, but the odds were against him. America’s horse got stepped on coming right out of the gate and ran a mile and a half with a gash on his coronary band. He finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong, falling short of immortallity by a devastating 1 ¾  lengths. Don’t let the Belmont cast a shadow on this colt’s greatness. He runs on pure heart and you can spot him taking it easy in third or fourth behind the pace, before coming alive and surging to the wire. Follow California Chrome on Twitter @CalChrome
